The Great Salt Lake supports massive populations of insects that feed millions of migratory birds. While the ecosystem depends on these bugs, they can be a serious nuisance for visitors. Timing your trip and packing the right gear makes all the difference.

When is bug season on Antelope Island?

Biting gnats are the worst during late spring and early summer.

If you visit outside of April, May, September, and October, prepare for heavier insect activity. Late spring and early summer bring intense swarms of biting gnats.

What are the biting gnats?

These tiny insects hatch in the warmer months and deliver painful, itchy bites.

Gnats are aggressive and can easily ruin a hike or beach day if you arrive unprepared. They thrive near the water and grassy areas.

Are the brine flies dangerous?

No, brine flies do not bite humans.

During the summer, you will see millions of brine flies coating the shoreline. They fly away when you walk through them and pose no threat to visitors.

How do I protect myself from bugs?

Wear a fine-mesh head net and apply strong insect repellent.

Standard bug spray is often not enough for the aggressive gnats. A head net is the only guaranteed way to keep them out of your face and hair.

What are the best months to avoid bugs?

Visit in April, May, September, or October.

These months offer mild temperatures and lower gnat populations. Winter also brings zero bug activity, though temperatures will be much colder.

Can I just stay in my car?

Yes, driving through the park is a safe option if bugs are too intense.

Guided tours and self-drive trips allow you to see the 500 to 800 free-roaming bison from the safety of a vehicle. Keep your windows rolled up during peak gnat season.

Questions travellers ask

Can I swim when the bugs are bad?

Yes, but biting gnats at Bridger Bay Beach can make changing and rinsing off uncomfortable. Use the coin-operated showers quickly to wash off the 5% to 27% salinity water.

Do guided tours avoid the bugs?

Guides know the area well, but insects are everywhere near the water during peak season. Enclosed air-conditioned vehicles provide a safe viewing space.

Do the bugs affect the Great Saltair?

Bugs are more concentrated at Antelope Island State Park due to the landscape, but you may still encounter flies near the Great Saltair and the state park marina.
